Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, also known as Texas A&M–Corpus Christi, TAMU–CC, A&M-Corpus Christi, or A&M-CC, is a state university located in Corpus Christi, which is a coastal city in the South Texas region of the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Nueces County, also extending into Aransas, Kleberg, and San Patricio counties, with a population estimated at a number of more than 280 000 inhabitants, during the 2006 census, fact which makes it eighth-largest city in the state.
TAMU-CC is part of the Texas A&M University System, and since it opened its doors to students, it has been known under various names: Corpus Christi State University, Texas A&I University at Corpus Christi, and the University of Corpus Christi (founded in 1947), becoming a public university in 1973, when the Baptist General Convention of Texas sold it to the State.
The university offers its students today educational programs in numerous fields of study, including two doctoral programs, 25 graduate programs and 33 undergraduate majors, through 5 colleges that include the College of Liberal Arts, which offers 12 undergraduate and 6 graduate degrees that range from the arts to criminal justice and psychology, The College of Business, which offers 8 undergraduate and 2 graduate degrees, and the College of Education, which offers teacher certification in more than 30 areas as well as three undergraduate degrees, 11 graduate programs, and 2 doctoral programs, to name a few of the university's academic divisions.
The athletic teams from TAMU-CC are known as the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Islanders, who compete in NCAA's Division I Southland Conference, since joining in 2006-07, in 5 men's and 7 women's sports, which include basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, softball and volleyball, the most successful team in the school's history being the women's cross country team, which won 7 out of the 9 conference titles, more than any other team in the history of Texas universities.
Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni, there are film directors Duane Graves and Justin Meeks, who graduated with Communication Arts degrees in 1999, their debut motion picture being The Wild Man of the Navidad, which was co-produced by Kim Henkel, who also co-writed and produced the famous horror film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
